To say Harvin Moore is rattled by Anne Sung's intelligence, her organizational skills, her hands
on knowledge of HISD, and the real possibility that his own gravy train may be ending oh
so soon - well, that's all understatement.
Sung is the real deal, a program changer, an inspirational leader who is finally getting the
attention she deserves from the Houston Chronicle and finally, a few days before the
2013 election, is being seen as a real threat.
The clincher for the local editorial hacks is, of course, financial: Anne Sung has outraised
Harvin Moore. Moore still has more money in his campaign coffers. Looks like he never
really expected a competitive race.

Disclosure: The Harris County AFL-CIO Council has endorsed Anne Sung
for Houston ISD, District VIII
Below is an excerpt from a Houston Chronicle Editorial endorsing Harvin Moore for the Board
of Education, District 7 - once again. There is also a good 'shout out' for our endorsed candidate,
Anne Sung. Note the emboldened words and Joanna Pasternak's answer to his comments commending
the high teacher turnover.
Harvin Moore has yet to step a foot inside a classroom and teach; yet, he has been a pontificating
mouth-diarrhea spewing critic of teachers for years (just go to one the school board meetings if you
don't believe me). The construction-bribing-payoff corruption has all happened under his watch
without nary a word to spew from his mouth about it. Both he and the Superintendent now own
all of this corruption-dysfunction-turnover in the Houston ISD.
The students end up the losers in all of this. It is a damn shame.
HISD probably leads all school districts in turnover and vacancies. What do you think happens
when you run off experienced career teachers and replace them with temporary teach-for-America
ones and substitutes? Many of these vacancies will continue throughout most, if not all, of the
entire school year.
Joanna Pasternak describes it well. Read on . . .

Houston Chronicle - October 4, 2013
"District 7: Harvin Moore, a member of the board since 2003, has been perhaps the strongest
supporter of Superintendent Grier. Though we are impressed by his challenger Anne Sung, we
endorse Moore as a steady hand and a master of HISD's details.
Moore is a fan of technology-aided "blended learning," which he says could help eliminate
benchmark tests that consume too much classroom time. He supports expansion of Apollo 20:
"It's shown astounding results in math. And no one doubts that it's reduced the dropout rate."
Moore, who has served on HISD's audit committee, says that the best way to fight corruption on
the school board is to have a strong superintendent. And he argues that high teacher turnover
has been good for the district: "We retained 90 percent of the most highly functioning teachers,
and we exited 52 to 54 percent of the lowest."

Subj: HISD endoresements
The Chronicle endorsees Harvin Moore for HISD Board with the quote,
"High teacher turnover has been good for the district". This statement
alone warrants no endorsement. In what management theory is high
employee turnover a good thing? HISD has a record number of teachers
leaving, many mid year, leaving students with subs. HISD has over
100 teacher openings posted as of today, and teachers are quitting daily.
They have had to hire 65 new principals this year and some schools still do
not have principals. There are schools where there is not one experienced
counselor resulting in students' schedules and graduation plans not correct
as of today, high schools with inexperienced 20 something principals, and
many schools with out of state hires because experienced principals in Texas
avoid HISD. Many schools have a teaching staff that is largely young and
inexperienced with few seasoned mentors to go to for guidance. High turnover
in the upper administration means too many are new to their positions and
"learning on the job". At one middle school with a new principal, three teachers
were assaulted this week and one teacher went down to HR and quit because
the administration does not seem to know how to keep the campus safe.
I guess Mr Moore would say, "Good riddance" while the school scrambles for a sub.
Mr. Moore does not "add value" to HISD.
(Editor's note: I remember when District IX candidate Davetta Daniels was interviewed
by the Houston Comical. They had already decided to endorse Paula Harris, and after
asking Daniels a few quick questions, they ushered her out the door. If you really
expected the Comical to endorse Anne Sung, you haven't been following Houston

No shortage of security breaches...
Dear HISD Community:
This letter contains important information for all Houston Independent
School District employees. Please review carefully.
On October 2, 2013, the district learned that CDs containing confidential HISD
employee information (specifically Social Security numbers) were erroneously
released to four businesses and a public university with which the district routinely
interacts in response to their open records requests. The district has contacted all
of those who received the CDs, and we expect to have all of them returned in the very
near future. We are aware of no evidence that any of these organizations has sought
to misuse this information.
We understand that this unfortunate incident gives every employee legitimate cause for
concern. We take the safeguarding of personal information very seriously. We deeply
regret any concern or inconvenience this incident may cause you and assure you we are
working aggressively to minimize any potential negative effects. We are also putting in
place immediate corrective procedures to prevent this from happening again.
We are notifying you so you can take action to minimize or eliminate potential harm. We
strongly encourage you to take measures now to help prevent and detect any misuse of
your information. As a first preventative step, we recommend you closely monitor your
financial accounts and, if you see any unauthorized activity, promptly contact your financial
institution. As a second step, you also may want to contact the three U.S. credit reporting
agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) to obtain a free credit report from each by
calling 1-877-322-8228 or by logging onto www.annualcreditreport.com<
http://www.annualcreditreport.com>. Please note credit agencies will not permit
HISD to act on your behalf regarding your identity data.
Even if you do not find any suspicious activity on your initial credit reports, the Federal
Trade Commission (FTC) recommends that you check your credit reports periodically.
Checking your credit reports periodically can help you spot problems and address them
Finally, we strongly urge you not to release or confirm any personal information to
persons who may contact you by phone or email regarding your identity or financial
Again, we deeply apologize for this error and thank you for your understanding.

Ed. Sec. Duncan using waivers to avoid negative publicity over NCLB
100+ requests for HVAC service repairs made by Bellaire High School,
including repairs to the campus's new wing. What is Principal McDonough
doing about them?
Former Bellaire High School Principal Tim Salem no doubt angered C.E.O.
of HISD's Construction & Facilities Service Department because he refused
to sign off on the work Satterfield & Pointikes did in constructing Bellaire's
new wing. Salem already knew S&P's work was problematic. Students and
teachers sat in hot classrooms the very first day the wing was used for
HVAC problems persist at Bellaire, just as they do throughout HISD. houstonisdwatch
obtained the information included in the link above through a TPIA request.
What is current Bellaire Principal Michael McDonough doing to fix Bellaire's
AC problems? Please, no begging of the question. Principals are responsible
for all aspects of their operation, despite what the hacks in the Grier administration
McDonough is reported to be hard to find. He doesn't do hall duty or cafeteria
duty. Does he even know his school has multiple infrastructure problems?
McDonough has good attendance at work. He has the time to be the kind of
astute, visible principal if he wanted to be.
Here's McDonough's attendance for 2011-12, 2012-13, and 2013-14.
It's one thing to show up for work everyday; it's quite another to lead a school, rather
than follow after Grier, looking for approval.
Like circus master B.T. Barnum, HISD is resorting to ceaseless self-promotion
to brag about Broad, since no one is listening
The Broad Award is a great way for a minority of the students in HISD to win college
scholarships. HISD is not the best urban school district in the United States.
It isn't even the best urban school district in Texas.
If you choose to believe HISD's endless self-promotion and hype, a smokescreen
to justify corruption at its core, that is your perogative. HISD had to have an
outside agency, and a suspect one at that, come in to validate what insiders know
is an ever sinking mess.
HISD wants you to deny the reality of a pretty bleak set of scores across several
domains. There are the A.P. scores with a lack of 3, 4, 5 scores indicating the possibility
the exam taker could earn college credit. There's a portfolio of STAAR E.O.C. scores,
STAAR results grades 3-8, and Stanford results which indicate some progress in
Of course, HISD placed 18 schools on the T.E.A. rating of the worst schools in Texas.
In the latest ratings by T.E.A. on HISD's academic performance, one in five HISD schools
did not receive a passing grade. Dallas ISD outperformed HISD.
Imagine how much progress HISD would make if its Goal 6, Create a Positive District
Culture, was actually valued and expected.
Does Nathan Graf know federal & state law about student busing? Does Leo Bobadilla?
*This is how HISD treats veteran employees. Transportation Supervisor Steve Cameron was
a 16-year employee of HISD. He questioned the departments rehiring of two drivers who
had been fired for failing to stop at railroad crossings as required by Federal & State
Commercial Driving Licenses.
*To cover his rear because he failed to adequately staff his department before the start of
school, Graf ordered the rehiring of these drivers and later fired Cameron for questioning him.
*Senior Manager of Transportation Operations Teasha Foster played the middleman in the
firing of Cameron, accusing Cameron of "not helping me." In short,, Cameron refused to do
her job in addition to his. Foster knows nothing about transportation. She was hired because
she knew Graf from his cooking days.
*Nathan Graf threatens employees - any employees who demonstrate more knowledge about
transportation and busing than he does. It isn't hard to do. He is am imbecile with regards to
*Like the rest of the chaotic Grier administration, Nathan Graf's transportation department promotes
unqualified individuals, rehires terminated individuals, and basis its decisions on political
scheming. Example? Byron Williams was terminated in September 2012, brought back to Graf's
department at a lower level position, then promoted back exactly to the position he was fired from.
*Chester Glaude is fearful for his job. He takes no stand on transportation issues, denies any
involvement with staffing decisions even though he is involved. He has not been fired yet.
